Antaran creates awareness about rich heritage of Indian handloom to bring due recognition and returns to traditional artisans for their unique skills through a five-year program through Incubation & Design Centres for handloom development in select lesser known clusters of Assam, Nagaland, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. These Centres serve as education and business development hubs for artisans, enabling designer-weavers to transcend into micro-entrepreneurs across the handloom value chain in each region.

Dipika is a landless weaver from Kamrup region of Assam. She did not have privilege of education as she had to weave commercially for low wages at early age to support family. Married young, she lost her home and loom in a flood. Building a temporary home, Dipika supported her family, weaving on a rented loom. Struggling to find work and caught in trap of low wages, she came to know of Antaran and joined classes started at Incubation & Design Centre at Bhagwatipara. She learnt new things on designs, markets and her abilities bloomed in no time. The biggest learning was that she herself could be an entrepreneur, freed from shackles of being a job worker.
